The Invaluable Tool of Nursing Assessment in Mechanical Complications of Acute Myocardial Infarctions

May 26, 2023 from 1:35pm EDT to 2:15pm EDT

In the case of many patients, an acute myocardial infarction (MI) is the most impactful part of their hospital visit. Unfortunately for a few, the mechanical sequela of an MI such as papillary muscle rupture or ventricular septal defect may end up being more life-altering than the initial cardiac event.

The purpose of this workshop is to highlight the mechanical complications of MIs and facilitate a collaborative discussion on the invaluable tool of nursing assessments which support the early recognition and intervention for these findings. The presentation first highlights the mechanical complications of MIs before the audience is engaged to develop a list of relevant assessment findings that can support the recognition of these conditions. Finally, case studies are used to highlight this learning in practice scenarios. Interactive tools including the Mentimeter website are used to facilitate audience participation in the presentation. This workshop builds upon cardiac nurses' toolkit related to physical assessments and the pathophysiology related to mechanical complications of a post-MI patient. In a cardiovascular nurse’s practice, this workshop supports early recognition of pertinent symptoms and anticipation of the interventions expected in response to these findings.
