An Exploratory Analysis of the Experiences of People Living with Heart Failure

May 26, 2023 from 2:20pm EDT to 2:50pm EDT

Heart failure places a significant burden on people living with the condition, their families, and caregivers, impacting the lives of one in every three people in Canada (CCDSS 2021).

The aim of this project was to gain insights into the needs, challenges, and enablers of people with lived experience (PWLE) with heart failure, their families, and caregivers which will inform ongoing initiatives as part of our national Heart Failure Action Plan for Canada.

A mixed method approach and co-development with PWLE with heart failure was conducted.  Data and inputs were sought using an online survey and focus groups exploring topics related to rehabilitation, mental health, women, and a palliative approach. Analysis of the quantitative survey was conducted using R Data Analysis Software and Excel pivot tables.  Qualitative data was examined, and thematic codes were identified and validated through inter-rater comparisons and review.

Among the 375 people in Canada who responded to the survey, 42% agreed they felt overwhelmed and stressed managing heart failure. The common theme that emerged from the mental health portion was access to health services and systems. Findings from the mental health focus group revealed there is a lack of mental health support, information, and education throughout the heart failure trajectory.

This study captured rich insights that can be immediately applied to clinical practice and has informed current and future initiatives for the Heart Failure Action Plan for Canada.
