Delivering Heart Failure Care during COVID- Our Virtual Reality

May 26, 2023 from 12:00pm EDT to 12:30pm EDT

The COVID-19 pandemic imposed the immediate need to provide outpatient nursing care to patients using virtual methods.  Nurses were forced to implement outpatient virtual care for people with heart failure (HF) in the absence of established guidelines or processes. The purpose of this workshop is to share the experience of HF nurses and nurse practitioners (NP) across Canada providing virtual care in outpatient HF clinics to help inform models of care that include virtual options for this patient population beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Nurses and NPs from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Newfoundland provided virtual care using a variety of modalities from simple phone call visits to sophisticated digital tools. Despite the variety of modalities, HF nurses and NPs experienced virtual patient engagement that enabled meaningful clinical encounters and should be continued beyond the pandemic. Conversely, in-person patient visits are recommended for other clinical scenarios to meet adequately patient needs. Through interactive discussion, HF nurses and NPs will describe the virtual care modalities used, key highlights of what went well, and situations where in-person patient visits are recommended.  While the opportunity for in-person care has returned, the lessons learned from providing patient care using virtual modalities during COVID-19 pandemic will help inform hybrid models of care that enable clinical best practice and optimize patient experience whenever possible.
