Poster B - Virtual Care in Heart Function Clinics - 10:15

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Heart Function Clinics (HFC) at two large quaternary hospitals in Vancouver, BC, transitioned clinic care to phone or video; i.e. virtual care (VC). A pilot feasibility study to conducting a larger trial to evaluate efficacy of VC compared to usual, in-person care (UC) was performed.

The primary purpose of the study is to track the team’s ability to identify patients and the time required to review records. The proportion of eligible and consenting patients for the study is also recorded. The secondary analysis is to determine the rate and percentage of patients who reach target doses of Guideline Directed Medical Therapy (GDMT) for heart failure (HF) in the VC compared to UC setting at 6 and 12 months from referral. An adapted, but validated survey to track VC satisfaction and patient reported cost savings was also created.

Using mixed methodology, a retrospective chart review was performed for study eligible patients referred to the HFC pre-pandemic, compared to during pandemic. The satisfaction survey was sent to recruit exclusively from the VC group.

Results of the study is currently being collected to be analyzed and available by January 2023. Although this study will not be powered to detect statistical differences, it will provide important knowledge about patient experience and VC’s effectiveness as a model of care delivery for HF ambulatory care. As VC will inevitably become a permanent part of our nursing practice, research based knowledge to shed light on its effectiveness would be invaluable.
