As a nurse, facilitating conversations with parents whose child is end-of-life can be very difficult. Nurses can often feel unprepared and may feel nervous that they might say the wrong thing and make parental grief worse. In this presentation, the nursing role of caring for children at end-of-life in the Pediatric ICU will be discussed and extrapolated to include inherent complications of ECMO that can compound parental grief. By exploring the parental experiences of having a child who is end-of-life in the PICU, nurses can understand how they can better support these families and create meaningful interactions that will help them navigate their grief, while learning to accept the loss of their child.
