Workshop: ‘Big B, Little a’, The Lipoproteins: What do they mean and how can we interpret them to help our patients?

Lipid panels are a pillar of cardiac risk stratification.  It is known that decreasing low density lipid levels provides vascular protection and mortality benefit for our patients.  In addition to routine lipid panel, the new lipid guidelines recommend monitoring apolipoprotein B and a one-time lipoprotein a level. We will explain the science of these two markers and how they impact practice. We will review the latest dyslipidemia guidelines and how lipoprotein a and apolipoprotein B assist with further risk stratification. As cardiac nurse practitioners working in the community, we spend time counselling patients on risk reduction. For our patients to receive maximal benefit, our measures must extend beyond lifestyle and diet management.  We will review the new guidelines which can inform us on how we can best interpret these lipoprotein and apolipoprotein levels for risk reduction. We will then translate this to best strategies for educating our patients. These levels can be predictive of atherosclerosis, vascular disease and even aortic stenosis.  They are inflammatory markers that indicate an increased cardiovascular risk. Patients with diabetes, if found to have elevated levels, can also be counselled on vascular protection. Our presentation will also discuss adjunct therapies which can provide added protection for our patients. This update will give nurses, working in a variety of cardiovascular settings, the information to understand why comprehensive dyslipidemia management is paramount for our population.
