The development of a smartphone desktop application to assist patients in the administration of nitroglycerin spray

May 24, 2024 from 10:45am MST to 11:00am MST

Poster Presentation: The development of a smartphone desktop application to assist patients in the administration of nitroglycerin spray

Patient education on managing angina and modifiable risk factors is imperative when a patient has been diagnosed with coronary artery disease (CAD). Given the importance of educational interventions, a desktop application was developed to assist patients when utilizing nitroglycerin (NTG) spray during episodes of angina. The purpose of this Quality Initiative (QI) was to provide patients with a desktop application on their smart phones with proper instructions on NTG use. The application instructs patients to take their nitroglycerin spray as prescribed when they are experiencing angina, and has a timer set for five-minute intervals. The application also alerts patients when to make a follow up appointment with a physician and when to call 911. If chest pain resolves prior to taking a third spray of NTG, links to organizational resources on CAD and modifiable risk factors are displayed for patients to review. The development and implementation of an application for patients to utilize when experiencing angina can be beneficial to ensure patients administer NTG spray as prescribed and at appropriate time intervals. Furthermore, the application provides patients with education related to CAD for ongoing learning. Though focus groups were completed initially, further evaluation of patient experience when using the application will be ongoing. This will allow the organization to expand and adapt the application to meet patient needs with an aim to improve experiences for patients with CAD.
