Differentiating Aortic Dissections: Assessment and Treatment Options

May 28, 2022 from 12:00pm PDT to 12:30pm PDT

Aortic dissection incidence has significantly increased over the last decade. New assessment techniques and ongoing improvements in diagnostic tests has led to improved diagnosis, treatment and management strategies for aortic dissections. The risk of death in relation to aortic dissections varies from 10-30% and therefore early recognition and appropriate management are necessary for positive patient outcomes.

The availability of appropriate qualified teams and surgical options are an essential component in the quick and efficient management of dissections. Nurses and nurse practitioners play a role in the early assessment, treatment, referral and transport of patients to these centres with an aim to provide patient with the appropriate care, with the appropriate practitioner to provide safe, effective care and improving outcomes.

This presentation will review Type A & B aortic dissections, etiology, diagnosis, management: both surgical and medical.  The purpose is to discuss classification, clinical presentation of acute aortic dissections, precipitating factors, operative indications, treatment modalities, complications and post-operative/conservative management and follow-up. Current research and guidelines will be discussed, as well as exemplars from clinical practice will be incorporated to facilitate learning. Nursing management and recognition will be highlighted.
